Change your life: Comfort- stretch- & panic-goals

17 November, 2014

People often talk about ‘comfort zones’ and the importance of edging ourselves out of them every now and again.

Pushing the limits of your personal comfort zone is really challenging, but the effects are hugely rewarding. It expands your horizons, boosts your confidence and helps you to feel that you can take on ever bigger and better things.

I heard a nice expression about this just the other day – that after taking on a challenge and stretching yourself you literally ‘step into a bigger footprint’.

Rather than thinking simply of ‘being in you r comfort zone’ or not, it may help to give yourself three levels of challenge with respect to your goals. Comfort – Stretch – and Panic.

“And the day came when the risk it took to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom.” – Anais Nin

A Comfort Goal speaks for itself. It’s something you feel comfortable with, you’ve probably done it before and it doesn’t pose a particular challenge.

A Stretch Goal is something you probably haven’t done before, and it definitely feels a bit scary.

A Panic Goal – well again, that speaks for itself. It’s downright terrifying to contemplate!

Remember that one person’s definition of ‘comfort’ could well be another person’s definition of ‘panic’ and vice versa – it’s a very individual thing. I know people who thrive on public speaking, whereas for me the thought of being the keynote speaker at a conference would send me into a state of paralysis!

Have you been drifting along in your comfort zone for too long? If so, maybe it’s time to shake things up a bit.

My challenge to you this week is to make a list of at least 20 Stretch and Panic goals. Then choose three – and start taking action towards at least one this week. If nothing else, it should get the adrenaline pumping.
